ABOUT MUSCLE KINESIOLOGY

Information provided by Bruce Gibson N.D.- Kinesiology Trainer.

The Human Body is a complexity of inter-related systems: the functioning of the whole organism being dependent on the integrity of each organ, the muscle groups, the circulation and the flow of energy through the Meridians.

Body harmony and muscle balance are essential for well-being. Kinesiology can determine areas of imbalance and stress in the body and give information on how well each organ system is functioning. Then, using touch, acupressure, meridian tracing and other techniques - we correct the imbalances and strengthen the corresponding muscles.

The field of Kinesiology was developed during the 1960's by a Chiropractor; Dr George Goodheart. He worked with the method of testing specific muscles and investigated why some muscles were felt to be tight and others could be tested to be weak.

He included an understanding of various reflexes on the body in re-establishing normal muscle innervation (nerve flow), circulation of blood and lymph - and an exploration of the Meridian Energy System. He was able to map how the major Muscles corresponds to the 14 major Meridians of Acupuncture and developed many techniques to normalise the function of the muscles through stimulating the various reflexes, meridian Acu-points and Neuro-muscular connections.

He incorporated research by his Chiropractic contemporaries such as Drs Bennett, De Jarnette and Chapman and developed procedures to correct Muscle imbalances to overcome weaknesses, pain and postural deviations. This approach soon became known as "Balancing" and has led to the extensive development of many other Systems of Kinesiology.

One of the first systems that utilised this approach was Touch For Health; formulated by Dr John Thie. He systemised the complex approaches of Goodheart and developed an approach that non-Chiropractors could use successfully. He authored a Text on Touch For Health in 1973, that is still used as the basis of Kinesiology studies. In Touch For Health, the Practitioner follows a sequence of assessing the state of: from 14 to 42 Muscles throughout the Body and examines these in relation to the 14 Meridians. As Muscle Testing is not really assessing a persons strength, more recently the Terminology has changed from "Testing" to "Muscle Monitoring". By using the technique of "Muscle-monitoring", we can derive precise information about muscle weakness, nutritional deficiencies, injuries, allergies, environmental sensitivities, mental blocks, posture, learning ability, neurological integration, meridian flow, and so on. With modern muscle monitoring technique, you are given the opportunity to discover minor imbalances in your System (or your Client's) before they become major problems.

We also now consider that a Muscle that switches "off" when Monitored; is not "weak" but "underfacilitated". This means that some aspect of supply to the Muscle or feedback to the Central Nervous System is inhibited in some way. The Kinesiologist locates the blockage or imbalance and uses one or more of several reflexes or Massage Techniques to re-establish normal flow to and from the muscle, which also benefits the corresponding Meridian energy, Organ and other structures.

Another approach that grew out of Touch For Health was developed by a Remedial Teacher: Dr Paul Dennison. Educational Kinesiology; Brain Gym and Whole-Brain Integration, utilises Muscle Monitoring but assesses the individuals Learning ability and Co-ordination in relation to Neurological integration. Dennison was working with Learning impaired children when he studied Touch For Health and applied some of the touch techniques and included a whole series of Movements; to "Switch On The Brain" -with considerable success. He discovered that when the individual learns to experience Integration between the Right and Left Hemispheres of the Brain, there is often considerable positive changes in thinking and behaviour. These techniques clear Stress and behavioural blocks, improving mental clarity and ability.

These techniques are being used in a lot of Schools now. In Australia it has been most popular in South Australia where almost all Schools have Teachers who have been trained in Educational Kinesiology. It is important to realise that it is not just Children who have these sort of Blocks. Most Adults have some form of Learning Block or difficulties in Concentration, information processing and recall. We could all benefit from some use of the range of techniques and movements that have become known as "Brain Gym". By regularly using "Switching-On" Techniques one can improve in all areas of one's Life. Learning is such an essential part of modern life, and even in being able to achieve our Goals requires a well integrated Nervous System and a clear Mind.

Another effective Kinesiology Method has become known as HYPERTON-X. This was developed by Frank Mahoney who had worked with Sports' Therapies and then came into Touch For Health. He also worked with Paul Dennison and the Edu-K System.

Frank Mahoney believed that Muscles that had become "Hypertonic" through injury or over-use were responsible for a lot of the imbalances that occur in the Posture, Nervous System, Cerebro-Spinal Fluid flow and Meridian Energy flow. A Hypertonic Muscle is one that can be identified as restricted in it's range of movement and would possibly be tight and sore. However, if a Hypertonic Muscle was Monitored directly - it would usually test as being "on" and further Monitoring may show it to be "Over-facilitated". Using the usual Kinesiology approach as well as Massage, does not necessarily change this Over-facilitated state. Frank then developed a Method to test for and quickly correct the imbalanced state which often relieved the pain, restriction of movement and postural imbalances. It is an exciting and innovative method that is useful for many conditions and to improve physical and mental performance levels.

Hyperton-X is a valuable system that you can learn through The Australian College of Vital Health.

Bruce Gibson was trained with Frank Mahoney in 1987, to teach this method and has developed a very successful approach to using these techniques for Body Therapy Practitioners and Sports’ Therapists.

* The Courses by Bruce Gibson:

Hyperton-X Kinesiology

– Integrative Muscle Balancing System.

This is an active and informative programme where participants learn an effective system for release of tight and restricted muscles and for muscle balance and Neurological (Brain) integration. You learn the essentials of accurate Muscle Testing that is the basis for all Kinesiology systems. Hyperton-X is based on the correction of imbalanced muscles. This releases stress as it is held in the Muscles of the body -which has the effect of improving physical as well as mental performance levels. Participants receive plenty of balancing during the course and become familiar with the techniques. Very useful for Corrective Body Therapy.

3 TWO-DAY SEMINARS; Level 1, Level 2, Advanced.
